A Flawless Evening

February 10, 2011

57 pupils spent their Friday evening in the inspirational company of the street dance group FLAWLESS from BRITAINS GOT TALENT.  The event at the Lowry Theatre was a huge success and pupils and staff alike were inspired and wowed by the detailed and diverse choreography displayed.  Flawless sent us a clear message throughout the show which was: – “We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams”

History Trip to Berlin

February 8, 2011

On Friday 4th of February 48 students and 5 members of staff traveled to Berlin to visit the historical sites and monuments of the Nazi Reign and the Cold War. After travelling all day Friday, students woke bright and early Saturday morning and headed to the centre of Berlin. Here students visited The Reichstag, The Brandenburg Gate, Tiergarten, The Holocaust Memorial, the former site of the Fuherbunker, Topography of Terror, Checkpoint Charlie, Bebelplatz, Neue Wache and the Plotzensee Prison.

On Sunday the students visited the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp that operated between 1936 and 1945, housing 200,000 prisoners during that time. In contrast, the Olympiastadion, the home of the 1936 Olympics provided an insight into the propaganda at the time. At the British Military Cemetery students had an opportunity to reflect on their experiences. From the viewing tower at the Berlin Wall Documentation Centre they observed the original border fortifications.

Before traveling home the students explored the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, the site of the main torture prison of the Stasi. They walked alongside the murals on the Berlin wall at the East Side Gallery. The last stop was the Treptow Park Soviet Memorial, a memorial to 20,000 Soviet soldiers that died during the battle of Berlin.

Local primary schools join in with St. Anne’s athletics

January 28, 2011

A big congratulations to all of the Year 5 & 6 pupils from St. Joseph’s RC, St. Mary’s RC, St. Winifred’s and St. Joseph’s Juniors Primary Schools who all took part in a Sportshall Athletics Competition at St. Anne’s on Tuesday 25th January, 2011.  It was a really fantastic event, made possible by Mike Frost from DASH ATHLETICS who provided the equipment and over saw the whole event. We also had the help of 20 sports leaders from year 10 who acted as judges, timers and scorers, they worked really hard and made the event run very smoothly.

The field events were new to many of the children, but they caught on quickly with some quality throwing & jumping. The track events were exciting & competitive and the support of the crowd was up lifting! Many of the teachers commented really positively and said it was the best sports event they had ever taken their schools to.

The winners were St. Joseph’s Juniors, and they will go on to represent the cluster in the Borough Finals at Priestnall School on Feb. 15th. Good luck St. Joe’s !
The Fairplay award was won by St. Mary’s RC, well done.

Year 7 Christmas Celebrations

January 26, 2011

Here are the photos from the Year 7 christmas disco held just before we broke up for the holidays.  A good time was had by all, but unfortunatley there wasn’t any photographic evidence of Mr McSweeneys disco prowess!
